Embrace the Spirit of Wheelchair Rugby League
Welcome to QWRL
Queensland Wheelchair Rugby League is proud to lead one of the most inclusive sports in the world, where everyone—regardless of age, ability, gender, or race—can participate as players, officials, coaches, or volunteers. Open to individuals with and without disabilities from as young as four years old, wheelchair rugby league thrives on mixed-gender teams that compete at all levels, from grassroots to international World Cups.
As the state governing body for wheelchair rugby league, QWRL is committed to fostering inclusivity, athletic development, and community engagement. We deliver programs across schools and local communities, secure and manage grant initiatives, and support representative pathways through talent identification camps, City vs Country matches, the QLD State Cup, and the Queensland Wheelchair Rugby League team.
Wheelchair rugby league is more than just a sport—it’s a family-focused experience. It offers a unique opportunity for family and friends to play alongside one another, creating shared memories both on and off the court. Here, the sports wheelchair is simply a piece of equipment required to play, not a defining apparatus.
Our Mission
QWRL’s mission is to make wheelchair rugby league accessible and enjoyable for everyone. By breaking down barriers to participation and creating inclusive environments, we promote physical activity, teamwork, and sportsmanship while building a sense of belonging in communities across Queensland.
Our History and Legacy
Since its origins in France in 2000, wheelchair rugby league has grown into a global phenomenon. The sport was first endorsed by the Rugby League International Federation in 2006, with international matches and World Cups solidifying its place in the rugby league family. The 2021 Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup elevated the sport to new heights, with participation rising 71% in its aftermath.
Queensland's Triumphs
Queensland is a proud competitor in the annual Wheelchair State Challenge against New South Wales, a fierce rivalry showcasing the best of wheelchair rugby league talent. After claiming our first title in 2022, Queensland has gone on to secure consecutive victories, with our latest triumph in 2024 further cementing our dominance.
Join us in celebrating this remarkable sport and its values of inclusivity, determination, and unity. Whether you’re looking to play, coach, officiate, or volunteer, there’s a place for you in the QWRL community.
